How to obtain an Italian passport

There are three ways to obtain an Italian passport: through birth, marriage or residence.

1. Birth (descent)

You qualify if you have an ancestor who was born in Italy and was still an Italian citizen at the time of his/her children’s birth.
All you need to do is prove your birth link to your Italian ancestor.

2. Marriage

You qualify if you are legally married to an Italian citizen, and after you registered your marriage in Italy.
After the marriage is registered in Italy, you will have to submit some documents online on the Italian citizenship website.
Once the application is approved, you will have to take a formal oath of allegiance to the Italian Republic and thereafter you will be able to obtain your Italian passport.
