Italian citizenship through grandparents

Can you get Italian citizenship through grandparents or through great-grandparents?

Italian citizenship can be obtained through grandparents and even great-grandparents, without any lineage restrictions according to Italian law.

This means that if our grandparent was Italian, you may be entitled to an Italian passport.
In fact an Italian ancestor, regardless of how many generations back, can transmit their citizenship to you.
For example, if your great-great-grandparent was born in Italy, was alive in 1861 at the time of the creation of Italy, and maintained their Italian citizenship when their children were born, then you’re eligible to apply for Italian citizenship.

If you wish to know how to get an Italian passport through grandparent lineage, please go to the page on Citizenship Documents.
