What are the steps to apply for an Italian passport in South Africa?

  1. If you have been registered as an Italian citizen, make sure your residence registration (AIRE) is up to date. If you are married and have children, those also need to be registered* and update before you apply for your Italian passport.
  2. Book an appointment with your Consulate on PrenotaMi
  3. Arrive at your appointment with your old passport if you have one, or another identification document, two ID photos, the passport fee PoP (check with the Consulate the latest fee, it is currently Euro 116 but the exchange rate is updated every 3 months).
How do I renew my Italian passport?

The procedure for renewing a passport is exactly the same as for obtaining an Italian passport.
Even if you want to just renew your Italian passport, a new booklet will be issued to you, and the requirements to renew or to obtain a passport are the same.
Tip: You are allowed to let the previous passport expire before renewal, this will not have any impact on your right to obtain a new passport.

*Registering birth and marriage certificates, as well as divorce orders, requires the document to be translated by a sworn translator. Please contact us for any assistance in this regards.
